1984-2013- Various teaching posts in Surrey & Sussex, in Infant, Junior & Secondary Schools
2003-2013 Millais School, Form Tutor years 7-11 and teacher of art, textiles & personal development.
I began as a child, doing jobs to raise funds for the NSPCC. As a university student, I enjoyed teaching literacy to adult learners. In my twenties, I spent two years teaching English as a VSO in Sierra Leone, West Africa. As a young teacher and parent I served on numerous school fund-raising committees, including Trafalgar Infants and Greenway Junior Schools locally. I volunteered for leading and joining many school trips during my ten years at Millais, including Morocco (my favourite- a real challenge for the girls!), France, Italy, USA, Canada, and China. Over the last 30 years I have been a volunteer steward at the Capitol Theatre (Horsham Arts Centre). I was on the committee of Horsham Cycling as social secretary for its first five years, and am still a ride leader for them, eleven years later. I helped set up Horsham Embroiderers' Guild & helped with Horsham Young Embroiderers' Guild. I currently also volunteer as a Youth Hostel Association manager, at small hostels and camping barns in England and Wales.
In April 2016, I ran the Action for Happiness 8-week Course, What Really Makes Us Happy?
On the art side, I set up and ran the Arts Award when at Millais, (an arty version of the Duke of Edinburgh award Scheme) The Art Apprentice Competition for teenagers in Horsham and for two years now have been art curator at Roffey Park Institute, the Horsham based leadership training charity, organising exhibitions to offer all talented local artists a showcase for their work, the latest of which is FLOCK, which formed part of the 2016 Horsham Festival.
In London, I helped at START, Prince Charles' Eco-Festival at his home, Marlborough House, in 2010, and for the last two years I have helped at Jenny Garrett's Rocking Ur Teens conference event for empowering teenage girls from all over the UK.
All of this has benefited many people and I loved doing it all with the win-win nature of volunteering!
